Niels Bohr was "...the wisest and most lovable of men" according to his colleague J. Rud Nielson (J. Rud Nielson, Memories of Niels Bohr, Physics Today, Oct. 1963, pg. 22). Many others who knew Bohr would agree. But Bohr was ... one of the most foresighted of men, and one of the few who not only thought ahead about the post-World War II implications of the atomic bomb but who personally urged President Franklin Roosevelt and Prime Minister Winston Churchill to prepare for the nuclear future.

Niels Bohr was a Danish physicist who lived between 1885-1962. He investigated atomic structure, modifying Rutherford's old model of an atom by confining electrons to orbits of specific radii. Niels Bohr played a large part in the development of the Manhattan Project, which was a secret program dedicated to building an atomic bomb during World War II. The project, which began in 1942, was the government's response to a growing fear that Germany was coming very close to developing a useable atomic weapon. Some of the greatest nuclear physicists in the world were involved in the project, among them J. Robert Oppenheimer, Enrico Fermi, James Chadwick, Isidor Rabi, and Richard Tolman. The project resulted in the first atomic bomb test, at Los Alamos, and eventually culminated in the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and, as is often maintained, the end of the war.
