This prestigious lecture series is named for Niels Bohr, the Danish physicist and 1922 Nobel Laureate in physics. These invited lectures are given by prominent scientists three or four times each year and are directed to a broad spectrum of physicists. The lectures are sponsored by the Danish Space Research Institute and the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics.

From 1975 to 1981 he was director of the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics, which shares research and facilities with the Niels Bohr Institute. Bohr and Mottelson coauthored a 2-volume monograph titled Single-Particle Motion (vol. 1, 1969) and Nuclear Deformations (vol. 2, 1975).
