Nicole Richie and her longtime friend Paris Hilton starred in the TV reality show The Simple Life from 2003 to 2007. The show, inspired in part by the 1960s sitcom Green Acres, featured wealthy society girls Richie and Hilton milking cows and adjusting to rural life while living in tiny Altus, Arkansas. The show was a hit, and the sequels The Simple Life 2 and The Simple Life 3: Interns soon followed. The co-stars had a falling-out in 2005, with Hilton announcing that she would replace Richie with Kimberly Stewart (daughter of rock star Rod Stewart) for future shows, but in 2006 the show returned with its original stars (although on a different network). Richie is the daughter of 1980s pop music star Lionel Richie, whose hits included "All Night Long" and "Dancing on the Ceiling." She had a daughter, Harlow Winter Kate Madden, in January of 2008; the father is Joel Madden, singer for the rock group Good Charlotte.

The show placed the socialites in working-class situations and proved to be a hit for the network. And though ratings dropped in subsequent seasons, the show found new life on the E! network, where it lasted several more seasons and even endured a public falling out between its two stars. ~ Matthew Tobey, All Movie Guide
