It has also causes his voice to sound like that of a Memphis born goose. It has been remarked that he looks like a "sausage" though it has been corrected by Cage's agent that he looks like a "HIDEOUSLY DEFORMED SAUSAGE!".

From All Movie Guide: As the nephew of filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, Nicolas Cage altered his last name to avoid accusations of nepotism. (He chose "Cage" both out of admiration for avant-garde musician John Cage and en homage to comic book hero Luke Cage). Even if he had retained the family name, it isn't likely that anyone would consider Cage holding fast to his uncle's coattails. Time and again, Cage travels to great lengths to add verisimilitude to his roles.

Determined not to coast to success on the coattails of his uncle, Francis Ford Coppola, Nicholas Coppola changed his name to Nicolas Cage when he began acting. In 1983, Cage achieved his first glimmerings of recognition for his hangdog leading-man performance in Valley Girl, before stepping in front of his uncle's cameras to star opposite Kathleen Turner in Peggy Sue Got Married in 1986. Cher lobbied to have Cage cast as her love interest in 1987's Moonstruck, and the Coens sought him out for his first adult comedy, Raising Arizona, that same year. Both movies helped cement Cage's reputation as a quirky yet charming everyman. After nabbing an Oscar in 1996 for his role in Mike Figgis' dark Leaving Las Vegas, Cage made a series of action films, including Con Air and Face/Off. Despite the success of some of these loud blockbusters, Cage continued to make quieter dramas, such as Adaptation., which earned him an Oscar nomination in 2003.
