LYCOS RETRIEVER
Nick Carter

The Nick Carter of the Killmaster series had some issues translated into Italian, but was never very popular. A completely different story was the revival of the original Nick Carter as a humorous detective in "TV comics" (e.g. cartoons where characters do not move), children's books, and comics by Bonvi (pseudonym of Franco Bonvicini, 1941-1995) between 1972 and 1991. This story has been told by J. Randolph Cox in this very magazine. Although the name of Nick Carter would immediately conjure the image of the Bonvi stories in most Italian readers, Bonvi himself did know and appreciate the original Street and Smith's character, who still has a small but dedicated number of affectionate collectors in Italy.

No proper account of Nick Carter could be complete without a listing of his enemies, a Rogues Gallery for the ages. Foremost among them, of course, was Dr. Jack Quartz, who actually preceded Professor Moriarty chronologically and is a significant (if little-known) prototype for fictional arch-villains. The second best of the villains was Dazaar the Arch Fiend, the beautiful criminal mastermind, who was capable of throwing a jack-knife across a street and having it land point first in a door lock. It was never quite clear who Dazaar was, as she was an expert of disguise and had trained six other people to assume the identity of Dazaar while she went on her merry villainous way, killing people by inserting radium into the sweatbands of men's hats or by using the Maiden of Steel (a deadlier version of the Venetian Iron Maiden) or by throwing hand-made knives at them from hundreds of yards away. Sometimes Dazaar claimed to be a Tibetan lama from "that mysterious country lying north of India." Other times she claimed to be a Russian princess named Irma Plavatski. At all times she was dangerous.

In Touch magazine reports that Paris Hilton was spotted with ex-boyfriend Nick Carter on Labor Day at Joseph's Cafe in Los Angeles. The meeting wasn't a friendly one though, as Hilton continues her efforts to get Carter banned from LA clubs.

Nick Carter's most inexplicable tattoo is the shark on his left bicep, which is accompanied by the Chinese characters for "Poseidon," the mythical god of the sea. The musician recently had the tattoo substantially redesigned, as you can see in these before-and-after photos. Why he kept the Chinese characters for a Greek god is a bit of a mystery.
