Nicholas Ray’s films portray the plight of the troubled individual in conflict with society. They raise tough questions and often present disturbing conclusions through their cataclysmic endings. His characters personify the existentialist anti-hero, and, for this, Ray was much respected by the French existentialist film critics under Andre Bazin (Naremore, 23). In a Lonely Place is, with Rebel Without A Cause and On Dangerous Ground, one of Ray’s finest and most complex films. It is a particularly interesting examination of existentialism and alienation through the eyes of a complex, antisocial character in an oppressive society.

The patron saint of loners, Nicholas Ray continues to cast a large shadow. And sure, you may have seen Rebel Without a Cause, but that’s just the beginning; these Cinemascope classics are required big-screen viewing. All films directed by Nicholas Ray.

Nicholas Ray's lavish and beautifully constructed widescreen epic about the life of Jesus of Nazareth.| "King of Kings" is built upon a series of narrative parallels and contrasts between Jesus and Barrabas. The film portrays the thief as a rebel leader of the Jewish resistance; unlike Jesus, who preaches a message of peace, Barrabas advocates violence as a means to an end. By building his drama around this religious and philosophical conflict, Ray establishes a tension that defamiliarizes this well-known story. | Highlights include the Sermon on the Mount and the scene in which Salome asks King Herod for the head of John the Baptist.

Despite his illness, Ray collaborated in 1978 and 1979 with German filmmaker Wim Wenders on Lightning over Water, intended as a tribute both to Ray's achievements and to their friendship. Completed in 1980 by Wenders, the film provoked controversy because of its blunt depiction of Ray's mental and physical deterioration. However, given his long commitment to truth, Ray probably would have approved of this aspect of the film.

Nicholas had listened openmouthed, and now he stared from Peter to Egon and back again. "So it's really true?" he asked. "One of you is my father?" His eyes lit up at the possibility.
