Niagara Falls has been the honeymoon capital of Canada for many years. This tradition started in 1804 when Napoleon's younger brother, Jerome Bonapart brought his new bride, Elizabeth Patterson, from Baltimore, to witness the majesty of the thundering waters. Subsequently, millions of visitors have chosen Niagara to start their new lives together. One major reason for this is that Niagara Falls is blessed with an abundance of natural beauty. From Fort Erie to Niagara-on-the-Lake, the entire 30-mile Niagara Peninsula, offers honeymooners breath-taking sights, and fond memories of this spectacle of nature. Sir Winston Churchill called the Niagara Parkway the most beautiful drive in the world.
Aerial view of Niagara Falls, with American Falls on the left and the Horseshoe Falls on the right The original Niagara Falls were near the sites of present-day Queenston, Ontario, and Lewiston, New York, but erosion of their crest has caused the waterfalls to retreat several miles southward. Just upstream from the Falls' current location, Goat Island splits the course of the Niagara River, resulting in the separation of the Canadian Horseshoe Falls to the west from the American and Bridal Veil Falls to the east. Although engineering has slowed erosion and recession in this century, the falls will eventually recede far enough to drain most of Lake Erie, the bottom of which is higher than the bottom of the falls. Engineers are working to reduce the rate of erosion to postpone this event as long as possible.

A growing market for weddings (including same sex weddings, which are legal in Ontario), Niagara Falls offers a large variety of wedding venues of all sizes. You'll first need to obtain a marriage license, available for $100CAN, which must be paid in cash. You each need to show two official pieces of identification such as a passport, birth certificate, or driver's license. Also, if either of you have been previously married, you'll need to show official proof of divorce or death of previous spouse. NOTE: If your divorce was granted outside of Canada, you'll need to follow some additional procedures to get your divorce certified. Allow extra time for this; give the Clerk's office a call for all the details.

Already a huge tourist attraction and favorite spot for honeymooners, Niagara Falls visits rose sharply in 1953 after the release of Niagara, a movie starring Marilyn Monroe. Later in the 20th century, the Falls was a featured location in 1980s movie Superman II, and was itself the subject of a popular IMAX movie. Illusionist David Copperfield performed a trick in which he appeared to travel over the Horseshoe Falls in 1990. The Falls, or more particularly, the tourist-supported complex near the Falls, was the setting of the short-lived Canadian television show Wonderfalls in early 2004. With the recent influx of more international tourists, annual visits exceeded 14 million in 2003. More recently, location footage of the Falls was shot in October 2006 to portray "World's End" of the movie Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End.[26] The movie Canadian Bacon takes place in the Niagara area.
