Newsgroups are organized and grouped by title using hierarchical compound names such as rec.sport.basketball.college. Here, rec specifies recreational topics, sport specifies a subgroup of recreation, and so on. The Big Eight mainstream hierarchies are:

Duke newsgroups contain topics of interest to the university community. Only members of the Duke community can subscribe to Duke newsgroups. Also, all newsgroups created for courses at Duke begin with duke.courses. For example, a discussion newsgroup for Biology 21 would be named duke.courses.bio21.

Once on Microsoft.com where the newsgroups reside, select a topic from the left-hand pane in a newsgroups area, and a list of conversations will appear in the main body of your screen. Click on a plus sign to delve into the details of a particular conversation thread. To add your ideas to an ongoing thread, click on Post Reply, or select New Post to start a new thread.

Microsoft provides an HTML interface to make using newsgroups as easy as clicking on a Web page. The left side of the page provides a list of newsgroups and topics. After you select a newsgroup, you can check out interesting posts, search the newsgroup to find specific topics, answer a question, use subscription to be notified about new posts of interest, or post your own questions to the group.
