Newsgroups are an excellent resource for new and experienced Linux users. A wide variety of groups are offer a wealth of information on general and specific topics of discussion. Generally, it is considered inappropriate to post messages (articles) to more than one group (cross-posting), so select the most appropriate group prior to posting any messages. When in doubt, the comp.os.linux.misc group is a good choice.

Newsgroups are similar to e-mail except that instead of sending your message to someone's mail box, the message is posted on a bulletin board where anyone can read it and respond. This allows a discussion to take place among several people. A newsgroup may have several active discussions at one time. These discussions happen in threads, groups of related articles generally with the same subject line.

Newsgroups live on news servers, much like email lives on mail servers. Messages posted to newsgroups are distributed to all the news servers that maintain subscriptions to those newsgroups. News servers can ... serve their own (local) newsgroups.

If you're wondering how anyone ever keeps track of what's going on on Internet e-mail lists and newsgroups, you need only stop by In Reference. Thousands of newsgroups are archived in the InReference directory, while mailing electronic mailing lists are archived only with the permission of the list owner. Most important, Reference.com allows you to keep track of messages on mailing lists and newsgroups. This can be done through a simple search which involves entering a simple word or term, or through advanced search where you define search parameters using queries. Interestingly, you can store queries for any period of time—three weeks for example—and get messages on an event as specific as merger or technological development. You can ... browse messages in newsgroups and mailing lists and post messages to newsgroups.
There are tens of thousands of newsgroups in the world. Each service provider has to decide which of these newsgroups will be carried on their service. Since there are millions of messages posted to these newsgroups, the service provider must ... decide how many days or weeks to keep messages available. There is a limit as to how many messages can be saved and still allow room for new messages. So, you'll need to check your newsgroups regularly to be sure you don't miss any messages.

There are a couple of methods for finding the newsgroups that will be of interest to you. If you are using Netscape Navigator (in the news window) go to options and select Show All Newsgroups. The newsreader will then display all the newsgroups that are available from your service provider. Be aware, this may take a few minutes to complete. A list of all newsgroups will then appear on the left side of the screen. Simply click on the title of the newsgroups to obtain all of the messages.
