Newsgroups are divided into categories. The categories help you determine what kind of group and what kind of postings you will find there. For example, alt.bicycle.rec.oz means this is an alternative newsgroup for recreational cyclists in Australia. Be aware that some newsgroups are not for the faint hearted. alt.gay.leather would not be a place to read interesting stuff about spring flowers.
These newsgroups are not official support venues for Qwest.net products. Technical support is available through the toll-free number and e-mail address that were included with your product package. There are a small number of engineers that monitor these groups and try to respond when appropriate and on a time-allowable basis. They are not specifically tasked with doing this as per their job responsibilities, and may or may not be able to respond to queries. Any contributions they make are strictly on their own time.

Binary newsgroups are only able to function reliably if there is sufficient storage allocated to a group to allow readers enough time to download all parts of a binary posting before it is flushed out of the group's storage allocation. This was at one time how posting of undesired content was countered; the newsgroup would be flooded with random garbage data posts, of sufficient quantity to push out all the content to be suppressed. This has been compensated by service providers allocating enough storage to retain everything posted each day, including such spam floods, without deleting anything.
Most SFF Net newsgroups are trimmed regularly. Older posts are scrolled off into the archives, leaving only the most current posts online. Both public and private groups are archived, but only members can search or read the archives.

USENET newsgroups may be set up for any group of UW faculty, students, or staff with a need to further their work at the university. The UW newsgroup server is a resource provided and operated with state funds and its usage is governed by federal and state laws and policies, as well as UW policies.
