Newsday is a daily tabloid-size newspaper that primarily serves Long Island and the New York City borough of Queens, although it is sold throughout the New York City metropolitan area. It is among the top 20 United States newspapers in terms of total distribution and readership.[4]
It is said that timing is everything, and Newsday founder Alicia Patterson had perfect timing. When she published the first issue of Newsday in a garage in 1940, it is doubtful that she could have foreseen the explosive growth of Long Island, or the paper''s subsequent growth over the next 53 years. What started as a local newspaper in a community of 600,000 has become one of the largest dailies in the United States, serving a population of more than 4 million people in Nassau, Suffolk and Queens counties.

Bill Moyers briefly served as publisher.[8] During the tenure of publisher Robert M. Johnson in the 1980s, Newsday made a major push into New York City. The paper's roster of star newspaper columnists and critics included Jimmy Breslin, Barbara Garson, Murray Kempton, Gail Collins, Pete Hamill, Sydney Schanberg, Jim Dwyer, sportswriter Mike Lupica, music critic Tim Page, and television critic Marvin Kitman. Newsday featured both the advice columnists Ann Landers and Dear Abby for several years. Its features section has included television reporters Verne Gay and Diane Werts, and reality TV columnist Frank Lovece.
Editor's note: A tour of the Newsday library in Melville, Long Island, will take place on Saturday afternoon (3:30 - 7:00), June 7, as part of the SLA annual conference. The tour is a $10 ticketed event.

Newsday is proud to support, through a $350,000 Times Mirror Foundation grant, the 'Mission to the Moon Exploring Space' Gallery at the Cradle of Aviation Museum. It is fitting that Long Island's newspaper contribute to an exhibit that tells the story of the historic Apollo 11 lunar landing, a mission in which a Long Island company played such a vital role."
