News Server: Messages

[C]alled USENET, news groups are accessed through a news server (check with your internet service provider if you don't already have access; not all servers carry all news groups). There are fifteen thousand news groups on the net, with more added every day. A news group can be thought of as a public email box that anyone can browse or send email to. Messages are not sent directly to your email box; you must connect to the news group (or subscribe) and retrieve the messages yourself, allowing you to pick and choose the messages you want to read. Subscribing to a news group is different than subscribing to a listserver. Subscribing essentially means selecting a particular news group for ready access the next time you want to browse news groups, and involves nothing more than clicking on the subscribe button in your news reader or browser, depending on your software.

Since Version 2, Netscape Navigator has included a newsreader that could access not only a default news server (typically, your ISP's) but others as well. Moreover, it could keep track of your interactions with multiple news servers, remembering for each which groups you subscribed to, and which messages you read. To show why this matters, Netscape deployed its own news server as a standalone that did not mirror the Usenet. On that server, Netscape's newsgroup hierarchy, which would have taken forever to develop if it had to follow the social and political rules that govern Usenet newsgroup formation, appeared overnight. If you are connecting properly, you should see the news server welcome banner. If you do not see a welcome banner, make sure that you are connected to the Internet and that you can reach other websites. If you see an error message, please write the message down verbatim and provide this information to technical support. You can type the word quit to exit the connection or proceed to the next step for some commands that you may issue in the window. If you do not type anything in the window, you will get an error message when the connection times out (after about a minute or so).

Now MPNews has a copy of all the messages from your existing news server, you can read them via the web at http://<servername>/. If you are using MPNews to completely replace your existing news server, this is all you need to do. However, if you want to keep your existing server running as well, carry on to the section below to make sure both your servers stay in synch.

This parameter contains the name of the organization/firm/association for which the news server is being configured; every single message posted locally will have a line in the header section describing the server under which the messages has been posted. Place the name of your organization or firm here.

Currently the news server is established READ-ONLY and will probably stay that way. However, it does allow you to track and monitor the messages posted to the forum in a faster convenient fashion. If you want to comment on a given message you just need to login and post it in the forum as usual.
