As a senior executive at Fox and News Corporation from 1988, Carey had a key role in the growth and success of News Corporation. His initiatives include the launch and growth of Fox Sports, the expansion of the Fox Television Stations group, the emergence of Fox cable channels, and the building of satellite platforms in Europe, Asia and Latin America. Carey joined Fox in 1988 from Columbia Pictures, where he held senior positions from 1981 to 1987. He is a Trustee of Colgate University and a graduate of Colgate University and Harvard Business School.

News International, the arm of News Corporation in the United Kingdom, looked to offer top executives and editors a mobile solution that combined voice, data, and e-mail on a single device. The media giant considered a BlackBerry solution from Research In Motion, but decided against it because of concerns about cost, administration expense, and flexibility. With an existing investment in Microsoft® Exchange Server 2003, communication and collaboration server, News International opted for mobile devices, powered initially by Microsoft Windows Mobile® 2003 and now upgraded to Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0. The solution provides users with direct push e-mail, giving them access to messages anytime, anywhere. News International is now rolling out the devices to other employees—including journalists—and continuing to cut communications costs.

The News Corporation is often identified with its head, Rupert Murdoch, whose family controls some 30 percent of its stock. Murdoch's goal is for News Corporation to own multiple forms of programming--news, sports, films and children's shows--and beam them via satellite or TV stations to homes in the United States, Europe, Asia and South America. Viacom CEO Sumner Redstone says of Murdoch that "he basically wants to conquer the world."
