New York University (NYU) is a partner on two NDIIPP projects, including one to archive public television programming and another to collect and preserve Web sites. These projects require a digital repository with ample storage space as well as dedicated computing power, so NYU turned to Sun to build the needed infrastructure.

The City of New York intends to make municipal information more readily accessible to the public and to encourage the increasing use of information technology resources as a means of improving government. To fulfill this intention, a new Local Law (11-2003) obligates City agencies to submit official publications in electronic format to the Department of Records. The Department will make these available to the public through its website within ten business days after publication.

The NYFWA was founded in 1938 and is 66 years old. Throughout its history, the NYFWA had dedicated itself to raising and maintaining high standards of business and financial journalism.

Each Sun Fire X4500 runs the Storage Resource Broker (SRB) software, which was developed at the University San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) and supports shared collections that can be distributed across multiple organizations and heterogeneous storage systems. Sun Fire V490 servers are used as test and development platforms for programmers working to customize the DSpace and SRB software applications to the needs of NDIIPP and other digital preservation projects that NYU is undertaking.

With 12,500 residents, NYU has the seventh largest university housing system in the U.S. and the largest among private schools.[12] Uniquely, many of NYU's residence halls are converted apartment complexes or old hotels. Most freshman residence halls are in the Washington Square area. While nearly all of the residence halls that primarily house upperclassmen are in the Union Square area, three of them are located in the Financial District. The university operates its own transit system to transport its students, by bus, to campus. Undergraduate students are guaranteed housing during their enrollment at NYU. Twenty-one buildings are in NYU's undergraduate housing system.
