1. New York -- New York State
   New York is a major agricultural producer, ranking among the top five states for agricultural products including dairy, apples, cherries, cabbage, potatoes, onions, maple syrup and many others. The state is the largest producer of cabbage in the U.S. The state has about a quarter of its land in farms and produced US$3.4 billion in agricultural products in 2001. The south shore of Lake Ontario provides the right mix of soils and microclimate for many apple, cherry, plum, pear and peach orchards.    On the plus side, New York State has a strict set of statutory and regulatory requirements which voting rights advocacy organizations fought hard to adopt and which set high standards for voting machines to meet. On the minus side, the State Board of Elections seems willing to compromise strict compliance with regulation in order to allow voting machines to qualify when they otherwise would not. While the State Board has frequently stated they want to do certification testing right rather than do it fast, the tendency has been to err on the side of speed rather than rigor.

4. State University of New York
   The presence of the University supports 11,900 full-time jobs in New York State, nearly 10,000 of which are in Broome County. The University employs about 1 in 10 residents in the Greater Binghamton area.
5. United State -- New York
   USS New York (LPD-21), a San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock, is the fifth ship of the United States Navy to be named for the state of New York. The ship is designed to deliver a fully-equipped battalion of 699 Marines.
6. New York State -- People
   New York declared itself an independent state on July 9, 1776. The New York state constitution was framed by a convention which assembled at White Plains, New York on July 10, 1776, and after repeated adjournments and changes of location, terminated its labors at Kingston, New York on Sunday evening, April 20, 1777, when the new constitution was adopted with but one dissenting vote. It was not submitted to the people for ratification. It was drafted by John Jay. On 30 July 1777, George Clinton was inaugurated as the first Governor of New York at Kingston.
7. State Laws -- New York
   This legislative season, lawmakers in 26 states have proposed 62 bills limiting cell phone use while driving, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL). The most common proposals, in 14 states, would require that drivers use a headset to talk. Bills awaiting approval in 10 states would restrict younger drivers from cell phone use. And legislation in three states -- Connecticut, Indiana and New York -- would completely ban cell phone use by drivers.

   PTA (and New York State (NYS) PTA, the first state organization) is celebrating its 110th anniversary, and is the largest child advocacy organization in the nation. 9. New York State Lottery -- New York Lottery
   [T]he government of New York Lottery tightened the screws even further. As an economy measure in August 1933, Young reduced the advertising budget for the ironically named ''Better Times'' Art Union to £1,500. Hammond and McArthur, in response, concentrated their advertising on the metropolitan newspapers. Sales fell and disagreement ensued. 10. Upstate New York -- New York State
    Susan B. Anthony to Amy Post, December 2, 1866 A New York State Constitutional Convention was held in June, 1867. During the last months of 1866 and the beginning of 1867, Anthony and Stanton organized a series of meetings throughout the state "to adopt measures to engraft the principle of universal suffrage upon the constitution of the state." With this letter Anthony enclosed a press release announcing the meeting to be held in Rochester on December 11, 1866. Speakers were to include Stanton, Lucy Stone, Charles Lenox Remond, and Frederick Douglass. Notice that working women were offered free tickets.
