La Velle E. Neal III, of the Star Tribune, reports the New York Mets are still one of three teams in the running to land Minnesota Twins SP Johan Santana, along with the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees. The Mets will not have to give up SS Jose Reyes for the opportunity to acquire Santana.

The Mets started the 1999 season well, going 17-9, but after an eight-game losing streak, including the last two to the New York Yankees, on June 6 the Mets fired their entire coaching staff except for manager Bobby Valentine. On that day, the Mets, in front of a national audience on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball, beat the New York Yankees 7-2 and they never looked back. Both Mike Piazza and Robin Ventura started to have MVP-type seasons and Benny Agbayani began to have an important role on the team. Also this was the breakout year for Mets second baseman Edgardo Alfonzo, as he had 108 RBI, and Roger Cedeño, who broke the single season steals record for the Mets. After the regular season ended, the Mets played a one game playoff against the Cincinnati Reds to see which team would advance to the playoffs. In that game, Mets ace Al Leiter pitched the best game of his Met career as he hurled a two hit complete game shutout, a 5-0 victory to advance to the playoffs.

A third round draft pick way back in 2001, Chase Wright has taken his sweet time to develop into the pitcher the New York Yankees were looking for when they selected the lefty out of a Texas High School. Fast forward five years, and Wright has turned himself into a sleeper in the surprisingly strong Yankees farm system. Still just 23, Wright, healthy for the first time in his career, posted back to back solid seasons in 2005 and 2006. He went 10-4 with 3.75 ERA in 24 starts for Low-A Charleston in 2005. This past season at High-A Tampa, Wright dominated Florida State League hitters in route to a 12-3 record with a 1.88 ERA and 100 strikeouts in 119.2 innings of work. He gave up just one home run and held opposing batters to a .218 average on the season.

In 2000 the Mets were back in the series, this time they were up against the cross-town rival New York Yankees. The series was never really close as the Yankees disposed of the Mets in 5 games. Since 2000 the Mets have struggled for an identity. They consistently fell prey to the seemingly unstoppable Atlanta Braves in the NL East.
