built 176 days ago
October of 1986--for New York Mets fans, it was an unprecedented, unparalleled rollercoaster of emotions stretching from the gripping National League Championship Series to the unfathomable World Series against the Boston Red Sox. A time when plays, players--Knight, Carter, Dykstra, and Mookie--and announcers' words were forever etched in time, "...it's a slow roller to first..."

The New York Mets are ready to bounce back from their tie for third in the National League East division last year, and are raring to go this season. With a new starting lineup, seats will undoubtedly go fast. Picking up both rookies and trades, the Mets are confident that this year will see them to a postseason run. New Manager Willie Randolph and General Manager Omar Minaya entered the 2005 season with two new key players. Both Pedro Martinez and Carlos Beltran were picked up through free agency by the Mets with hopes that they would improve the lineup and rotation.
This year's cover athlete, New York Mets(R) Third Baseman David Wright joined a hallowed group of MLB All-Stars that have graced the cover including last year's cover athlete, Boston Red Sox(TM) All-Star, David Ortiz. In just his third season in the Majors, Wright was named to the NL All-Star Game as a starter, and ranked among the club's top three hitters in all offensive categories for the 2006 Mets, who were the top run-scoring team in the National League. In addition, Wright heads the Do The Wright Thing charity whose mission is to increase awareness about multiple sclerosis and to raise money for multiple sclerosis organizations and projects.
S[H]ea Stadium is named after William Alfred Shea, an attorney who was instrumental in acquiring a new team for New York following the city's abandonment by the Giants and the Dodgers in the 1950s. Appointed chairman of the Baseball Commission by then New York mayor Robert Wagner, Shea first tried to get the Cincinnati Reds, the Pittsburgh Pirates, or the Philadelphia Phillies to move to New York, but had no luck. He then tried to organize a third major league, the Continental League, in 1958, with a franchise for New York, but the league died before a single game was played. In 1960, National League owners decided to expand to 10 teams and awarded franchises to Houston and New York. There were rumors that New York would be rejected unless it guaranteed construction of a new stadium. At Sheas suggestion, Wagner sent telegrams to each owner with such an assurance, and the Mets started play in 1962.

TOKYO — New York Mets manager Bobby Valentine met up Saturday with outfielder Tsuyoshi Shinjo, who earlier this week became only the second Japanese position player to sign with a major league team. The two held a joint news conference in Tokyo, five days after the Mets signed the 28-year-old free agent to a $700,000, one-year contract. Valentine presented Shinjo with the No. 5 uniform he will wear while trying to break into the starting lineup of the NL champions.

In 1986, the New York Mets clinched the National League Pennant by defeating the Houston Astros in the National League Championship Series. The Mets would face the Boston Red Sox in a memorable World Series, defeating the cursed Red Sox in seven games. Darryl Strawberry put the final dagger in the Red Sox, hitting a home run in the bottom of the 8th inning of Game 7.
