New York Jets joined the National Football League (NFL) in 1970. The club fielded several powerful squads during the 1980s, reaching the playoffs four times from 1981 to 1986. The New York Titans became charter members of the American Football League (AFL) in 1960, naming former quarterback great Sammy Baugh as their first head coach. The team enjoyed modest success during its first eight seasons, finishing second in the Eastern Division three times. In 1963 Weeb Ewbank was named head coach, and the team’s name was changed to the Jets because the team’s home, Shea Stadium, is located between New York’s John F. Kennedy International and La Guardia Airports. The Jets produced back-to-back rookies of the year in 1964 and 1965, running back Matt Snell and Joe Namath.

The financial future of the New York Jets went from riches to rags this summer as politicians nixed the team's bid to build a new stadium on Manhattan's west side. The Jets were willing to spend $700 million out of their own pocket to fund the deal. But heavy lobbying by Cablevision Systems, which owns New York's Knicks and Rangers, helped defeat the stadium. Now it looks like the Jets will remain second-tier tenants in Giants Stadium until they can find another location, possibly in Queens near Shea Stadium. But Queens is no match for Manhattan when it comes to sponsorship revenue.

The New York Jets were founded in 1960 as a member of the now defunct American Football League. Originally name the Titans they became the Jets in 1963 when the team changed ownership. Despite recent attempts to build a new stadium for the Jets, it seems they will continue to share Giants Stadium with the New York Giants for the time being. The earliest significant achievement for the Jets came in Super Bowl III, when the Jets upset the heavily favored NFL team, the Colts. The Jets win over the Colts not only solidified their reputation but ... the reputation of the AFL as a whole. All of this would have been very difficult without the help of the Jets very charismatic and talented Quarterback, Joe Namath.

The New York Jets organization is committed to helping the New York community. Over the past seven years, the Jets and their charitable foundation have donated or contributed more than seven million dollars to promote youth health, fitness and education, particularly in disadvantaged communities. From fighting childhood obesity through the Generation Jets: Be Lean & Green initiative to launching a football team in a Harlem high school, urging students in the Bronx to eat right and move more and supporting the efforts of the Alliance for Lupus Research, the New York Jets invest in programs that make a difference in the lives of others. In addition to the Jets Foundation, which supports its own youth initiatives, the Jets partner with numerous established charitable organizations and participate in causes sponsored by the NFL.
