Swedish sovereignity over New Sweden was at an end, but the Swedish and Finnish presence was very much in evidence. In fact, Governor Stuyvesant permitted the colonists to continue as a "Swedish Nation" and be governed by a court of their choosing, be free to practice their religion, organize their own militia, retain their land holdings and continue trading with the native people. This independent "Swedish Nation" continued until 1681 when the Englishman, William Penn received his charter for Pennsylvania and the three lower counties, present-day Delaware.
New Sweden is an interesting pilot site for a variety of reasons. Located in Aroostook County in the northernmost part of Maine, a region of the state that is often under–represented in statewide education and cultural initiatives, the community has a distinct culture and history and represents a vast agricultural part of Maine that few people outside of the region know well. New Sweden was settled as a planned Swedish immigrant community in the 1870's to firmly establish a strong Maine presence in a lightly-populated region subject to ongoing border disputes with Canada.

On Sunday, April 27, 2003, sixteen members of the Gustaf Adolph Evangelical Lutheran Church in the town of New Sweden, Maine (population 620), became ill after a church breakfast following the service. By Monday evening, it was determined that their sickness, and the subsequent death of one of them, was caused by arsenic poisoning, and, further, that the arsenic had been deliberately put into the church's coffee pot by person or persons unknown. A criminal investigation began, but within days, a member of the congregation, Daniel Bondeson, shot himself to death in his farmhouse, leaving a note in which he confessed to the crime.

In the 17th cent. Swedish colonial aspirations in North America (see New Sweden) proved short-lived. The Peace of Westphalia (1648; see Westphalia, Peace of), which ended the Thirty Years War, gave W Pomerania, Wismar, and the archbishopric of Bremen to Sweden, making the Swedish kings princes of the Holy Roman Empire. Charles X, who became king on the abdication (1654) of Christina, successfully led wars against Poland and Denmark. The southern provinces of Sweden were definitively recovered from Denmark in 1660. Under Charles XI (reigned 1660–97), Sweden became an absolute monarchy, and the great nobles lost their independence.
The official duties of the first governor of New Sweden were carried out by Lieutenant (then raised to the rank of Captain) Måns Nilsson Kling, until the next governor was chosen and brought in from the mainland Sweden, two years later. [2]
In 1642 Printz was chosen to be the new governor of New Sweden, in America. He was 50 years old. The Swedish government made him a knight. They gave him a list of Instructions. The list told him exactly what to do as the Governor. He was told to keep the peace with the Native Americans and with the settlers from other countries.
