The New Orleans Saints are a professional American football team based in New Orleans, Louisiana. They currently belong to the Southern Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League (NFL). Founded in 1967, the Saints have struggled throughout their history. Their early years were especially bleak; they went more than a decade before they managed to finish a season with a .500 record and two decades before having a winning season. Their greatest years of success were from 1987-1992, when they made the playoffs four times. The team experienced a brief renaissance in 2000, defeating the St. Louis Rams in dramatic fashion for the team's only playoff win.

The team’s woes continued during the 1980s... and New Orleans Saints was never able to put together more than eight wins in a season. Under head coach Jim Mora, the New Orleans Saints achieved their first winning record and their first playoff appearance in 1987. A former defensive coordinator for the New England Patriots, Mora was named National Football League (NFL) coach of the year. Running back Rueben Mayes, the 1986 rookie of the year, and wide receiver Eric Martin, a three-time 1,000-yard gainer, anchored the National Football Conference’s (NFC) second-best offense. Mora steered the Saints to three consecutive trips to the postseason from 1990 to 1992.

The New Orleans Saints are definitely this seasons version of "America's Team". Undoubtedly a nation will pull behind this city's team as most of the Gulf Coast attempts to rebuild from America's worst natural disaster in Hurricane Katrina. Aaron Brooks will become everyone's favorite quarterback, as he leads the Saints into a season full of what-if's and possibilities. Last season Brooks threw for 21 touchdowns and, although he doesn't have the speed and agility he had three or four seasons ago, he's still a rushing threat the defenses have to respect. Running back Deuce McCallister has rushed for over 1,000 yards in the past three seasons. Plagued by injury last season, McCallister still was able to post great rushing numbers and score nine times. Joe Horn is part of the fraternity of flamboyant and controversial wide receivers in the NFL.

The New Orleans Saints were founded in 1967. They have had little success in the NFL since that time. They are currently one of three teams to never play in a Super Bowl or NFL Championship game along with the Jaguars, and the Texans. The Saints didn't have a winning season until 1987 when they went 12-3. The Saints finally won a playoff game in 2000 when they beat the Rams in the 1st Round of the playoffs.

New Orleans’ Brees went 25-for-36 for 272 yards - a lot of the yardage coming late when the Saints had to use the “no-huddle” offense; he ... threw 2 INT’s. WR Marques led all Saints receivers with 126 yards receiving; TE Eric Johnson caught 3 balls for 28 yards and a TD. St. Louis (1-8) hope to carry momentum into next week, when they fly west to San Francisco to face the 49ers next Sunday. New Orleans (4-5), whose division title aspirations took a hit, go west to play the Houston Texans, also next Sunday afternoon.
