New Orleans Hornets: Games
built 188 days ago
The Hornets opened their inaugural season in New Orleans against the Utah Jazz, who were originally in New Orleans and called the New Orleans Jazz, with a 100-75 win; "Pistol" Pete Maravich had his number retired during halftime. It was the first regular season NBA game played in New Orleans in 23 years (there were a few exhibition games played through the years including the then Charlotte Hornets in New Orleans in 2000). They qualified for the playoffs for the fourth straight year in 2002-03, but were beaten by Philadelphia again. Jamal Mashburn ... missed most of these playoffs.
Heading into their final season in the Eastern Conference, the Hornets were ready to make their second season in New Orleans one to remember. Baron Davis looked healthier than ever. Jamaal Magloire, after his first full season as the starting center, looked like he was poised for a breakout year. And Jamal Mashburn had just come off a career-year in which he played in all 82 games and was named an All-Star, both firsts for the veteran forward.
"Citizens for 1 Greater New Orleans was formed out of frustration at the response to levee safety by Blanco and Louisiana Legislators," said founder, Ruthie Frierson. "People of New Orleans are fed up," she continued. "Many lost lives, jobs, homes and possessions. They are enraged that Louisiana politicians are still playing games with their lives. The people are focused on and demanding safety from future flood devastation," Frierson concluded.
David West, New Orleans' leading scorer, missed the game to be with his wife and newborn child. Desmond Mason was the only Hornets player other than Paul in double figures with 12 points.
Despite Empty Seats at Home, Hornets are Thriving Chris Paul had 33 points, 12 assists and 9 rebounds to lead the host New Orleans Hornets to a 112-108 overtime victory last night against the Dallas Mavericks. Peja Stojakovic made a game-tying 3-pointer with 2.9 seconds left in regulation for the Hornets, who had lost 21 consecutive games to the Mavericks dating to November 1999. Stojakovic finished with 22 points, while Tyson Chandler added 21 points and 13 rebounds.
Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant scored 50 points for the fourth consecutive game on Friday night against the New Orleans Hornets. Bryant is only the second player in NBA history to accomplish the task. The other player to do it being the immortal Wilt ‘The Stilt’ Chamberlain. Wilt holds the record with seven straight 50 pointers.
