1. Contracts
   Contracts are promises that the law will enforce. The law provides remedies if a promise is breached or recognizes the performance of a promise as a duty. Contracts arise when a duty does or may come into existence, because of a promise made by one of the parties. To be legally binding as a contract, a promise must be exchanged for adequate consideration. Adequate consideration is a benefit or detriment which a party receives which reasonably and fairly induces them to make the promise/contract. For example, promises that are purely gifts are not considered enforceable because the personal satisfaction the grantor of the promise may receive from the act of giving is normally not considered adequate consideration.
2. Contract Manufacturing -- Contract Manufacturer
   Swiss biologics contract manufacturer Lonza is building two commercial-scale mammalian cell-based contract manufacturing facilities. Lonza’s first $250 million contract manufacturing facility has been outsourced to produce Avastin, Genentech’s cancer drug. The second $350 million facility will support the needs of additional customers.

   BOSTON, July 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- AMICAS, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMCS), a leader in radiology and medical image and information management solutions, today announced that 14 new contracts were signed in the second quarter of 2007. The signing of these contracts further expands AMICAS' presence in the radiology automation space.
5. New York Giants -- Contract
   Shortly after Gibril Wilson bolted town to join the Oakland Raiders, the New York Giants filled that void by signing veteran safety Sammy Knight to a three-year, $5.15 million contract. Unfortunately, the move did not seem please many fans. At 32-years of age and known for being notoriously slow, the move appeared to be a bit of a downgrade. However, upon further investigation, it became blatantly obvious why the Giants chose Knight over some of the other free agents -- his leadership and ferocity.

   McQ Inc., a leader in developing, manufacturing and delivering advanced sensors to the commercial sector and U.S. government, has recently been awarded four new contracts. The awards will allow the company to continue its work developing advanced Unattended Ground Sensors (UGS) and fusion processing technologies.

   IRVING, Texas, Nov. 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- EFJ, Inc. (Nasdaq: EFJI) announced today that 3e Technologies International (3eTI) has received contracts totaling more than $2.3 million from the U.S. Navy to provide secure wireless communications for shipboard applications. 3eTI has received two incremental awards of $573,000 and $1.1 million to extend 3eTI's force protection and installation management system solution for the U.S. Navy. Under a third award of $597,000, 3eTI will develop a maritime network solution for the U.S. Navy.
8. Contracts -- Parties
   CARLSBAD, Calif., Oct. 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Isis Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Nasdaq: ISIS) announced today that its Ibis program has been granted three new government contracts valued at up to $10 million for the continued development of its TIGER biosensor technology. TIGER, which stands for Triangulation Identification Genetic Evaluation of Risks, is a research program initially sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) under a subcontract from San Diego-based Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) for bioweapons defense. The TIGER program is ... funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for epidemiological surveillance applications, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for the development of a microbial agent database, and by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health, for biological products screening. The development of these various applications significantly broadens and enhances TIGER's commercial value and opportunity in the government, research instrument, and medical and diagnostic markets. Together with prior awards, Ibis has received contracts for up to $65 million in funding from multiple government agencies.
9. Raytheon -- Contracts
   Raytheon is under contract to make the first 500 rounds. The Army program office at Picatinny Arsenal, N.J., says Raytheon will produce at least the first 3,000 shells and could compete to make the remaining 27,000.
10. Privatization -- Contracts
    [One] criticism of privatization under Mayor Daley is that contracting with private firms is simply a way of evading the Shakman decrees, strict rules limiting the use of traditional political patronage hiring. Critics have labeled efforts to subvert Shakman and steer contracts to friendly firms “pinstripe patronage.”
