Arunee leads the Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics department at Neurogen, and is responsible for a full range of drug metabolism and pharmacokinetic studies in support of drug candidate selection and regulatory submissions. She joined Neurogen in 1992 as Senior Scientist and assumed positions of increasing responsibility at the Company, to Director in 1998 and then to Senior Executive Director in 2004. She had previously served as Senior Research Pharmacokineticist at Marion Merrell Dow in Cincinnati and as Associate Professor of Forensic Medicine at Chulalongkorn University Medical School in Bangkok, Thailand.

Stephen R. Davis, the company's president and chief executive officer, said the layoffs are part of Neurogen's plan to focus its resources on its drug development trials that show the most promise. The company is making strides in several areas, particularly its clinical trials of drugs to treat insomnia, Parkinson's disease and Restless Legs Syndrome, he said.

Facilitating its drug discovery capabilities is Neurogen's own system, called Accelerated Intelligent Drug Design (AIDD), which uses high-throughput screening as well as robotics and informatics along with the company's combinatorial chemistry systems. These systems allow for quick combinations of chemical agents in its search for multiple drug candidates.
