Nerva: Trajan
built 606 days ago
Nerva was childless, so he adopted Marcus Ulpius Traianus (Trajan) to help him and to provide a strong successor. Trajan was governor of Upper Germany, a respected military leader. The formal adoption took place in October 97 AD.
The fourth of the imperial fora, the Forum of Nerva was dedicated by Nerva in AD 97, after the death of Domitian and his damnatio memoriae. It enclosed a portion of the Argiletum, the thoroughfare joining the Forum Romanum and the Subura and, for this reason... was known as the Forum Transitorium. The lateral walls of the forum were lined with paired columns broken by a number of doors to provide access to the Forum of Julius and the Forum of Augustus on one side and to the Temple of Peace on the other. The curved front and rear walls were later imitated in the Forum of Trajan.
Nerva may have been approached by the conspirators against Domitian because he was elderly (61) and childless. He adopted Trajan, already a commander of the armies on the German frontier, in the face of rising difficulties in administering the empire.
Bust of emperor Domitian. Capitoline Museums, Rome. Trajan became Caesar and later emperor, although there were relatives of Nerva living. But Nerva did not esteem family relationship above the safety of the State, nor was he less inclined to adopt Trajan because the latter was a Spaniard instead of an Italian or Italot, inasmuch as no foreigner had previously held the Roman sovereignty; for he believed in looking at a man's ability rather than at his nationality.[44]
