Altair and the Elder were unable to do anything when Nerva jumped from the hole with Wealthow in his arms. Then they heard the terrified screams of the people below the Tower. Altair rushed to see what was going on, and he saw Nerva hoist Wealthow onto Theodoric’s protesting Peco-Peco and run off with her and the animal. They were heading toward the western gate.

Upon taking office, Nerva made immediate changes. He ordered the palace of Domitian to be renamed the House of the People, while he himself resided at the Horti Sallustiani, the favorite residence of Vespasian. More significantly, he took an oath before the senate that he would refrain from executing its members. Nerva looked at the three of them, expecting the usual sardonic smile that people flashed on him ever since he was declared criminal. But today he wasn’t greeted by anything of the sort. Theodoric, Wealthow and Altair were simply looking down on him and waiting for his answer. Their serious expression was unnerving him. He had completely forgotten how it was to be truly believed by people. It stung him like a needle.
