Marcus Cocceius Nerva, (AD 35 - 98) Roman emperor (AD 96 - 98), was a member of the Italian nobility rather than one of the elite of Rome, like Vespasian the founder of the Flavian dynasty. He was born in the Etruscan town of Narnia, to the north of Rome, on November 8, 35. He was the last emperor who was Italian both by family and by birth. Nerva had not pursued the usual administrative career, although he had been consul with Vespasian in 71 and with Domitian in 90.

Marcus Cocceius Nerva (November 8, 30 – January 27, 98) was a Roman Emperor who briefly reigned from 96 until his death in 98. Nerva acceded to this position at the advanced age of 65, after a lifetime of imperial service under emperor Nero and the rulers of the Flavian dynasty, Vespasian, Titus and Domitian. Under Nero, he was a member of the imperial entourage and played a vital part in exposing the Pisonian conspiracy of 65. Later, as a loyalist to the Flavians, he attained consulships in 71 and 90 during the reigns of Vespasian and Domitian respectively.

Nerva was the first of the "five good emperors" and the first to adopt an heir who wasn't part of his biological family. Nerva had been a friend of the Flavians and had no children of his own. He built aqueducts and worked on the transport system and built granaries to improve the food supply.

Marcus Cocceius Nerva was born on 8 November at Narnia, 50 miles north of Rome. Nerva was born into the household of a wealthy lawyer whose family was well accustomed to holding high office. Nerva's great-grandfather had even been consul in 36 BC and his grandfather had been a member of emperor Tiberius' imperial entourage. Nerva's mother was even the great-granddaughter of Tiberius. His grandfather was in the imperial entourage at the time of Nerva's birth. On his aunt on his mother's side of the family was even the great-granddaughter of Tiberius.

Marcus Cocceius Nerva, Roman emperor from the 18th of September 96 to the 25th of January 98, was born at Narnia in Umbria on the 8th of November, probably in the year 35. He belonged to a senatorial family, which had attained considerable distinction under the emperors, his father and grandfather having been well-known jurists. A single inscription gives the name of his mother as Sergia Plautilla, daughter of Laenas. In his early manhood he had been on friendly terms with Nero, by whom he was decorated in 65 with the triumphal insignia after the suppression of the Pisonian conspiracy.
