Neptune (Planet): Everytime Uranus
built 275 days ago
Neptune, taken by Voyager 2. Neptune was discovered by astronomers, Urbain Le Verrier and John Couch Adams who were both given credit for the discovery. The planet was the first to be discovered by mathematical predictions instead of regular telescope viewings. Because of Uranus' weird movements in its orbit, it led astronomers to search for the new planet. The planet was visited by only one spacecraft, Voyager 2 on August 25, 1989. Neptune once had a huge storm known as the "Great Dark Spot" which was discovered in 1989 by Voyager 2. However, the dark spot was not seen in 1994, and new spots were found since then.
Neptune was the second major planet, after Uranus, to be detected using a telescope. Mathematical theories of astronomical orbits led to the discovery of Neptune. To account for wobbles in the orbit of the planet Uranus, British astronomer John Couch Adams and French astronomer Urbain Jean Joseph Leverrier independently calculated the existence and position of a new planet in 1845 and 1846, respectively. They theorized that the gravitational attraction of this planet for Uranus was causing the wobbles in Uranus’s orbit. Using information from Leverrier, German astronomer Johann Gottfried Galle first observed the planet by telescope in 1846.

In the original manga, Sailor Neptune and Sailor Uranus were lovers. In the Japanese anime, this was the same. However, in the dub, it was decided to change their relationship to that of cousins, as it was too controversial for a children's show. Some have hypothesised that in the Moon Kingdom, Sailor Uranus was a man ("Prince Uranus"), and was reincarnated as female (... making Haruka and Michiru's relationship "really heterosexual"), but this has been refuted by Naoko Takeuchi. Some characterise Haruka as being the dominant personality in the relationship, although it could be argued that Michiru has Haruka wrapped around her finger.
The discovery of Neptune was one of the triumphs of celestial mechanics. In 1846, to account for perturbations in the orbit of the planet Uranus, the French astronomer Urbain Jean Joseph Leverrier calculated the existence and position of a new planet. In that year the German astronomer Johann Gottfried Galle discovered the planet within 1° of that position. The position of Neptune was calculated independently by the British mathematician John Couch Adams, but observers in Britain did not act promptly enough to make the discovery of the planet.
Sailor Neptune derives her power from the planet Neptune. Her powers are water based and her guardian is the Ocean. Her original mission, along with Sailor Uranus and Sailor Pluto, was to protect the solar system from outside invaders. She and the other two outer senshi were given powers far greater than those of the inner senshi. At the same time, the outer senshi, during the silver millenium, were loners, left to guard the solar system alone.

Size comparison of Neptune and Earth. Shortly after its discovery, Neptune was temporarily called as "the planet exterior to Uranus" or as "Le Verrier's planet". The first suggestion for a name came from Galle. He proposed the name Janus. In England, Challis suggested the name Oceanus. In France, Arago suggested that the new planet be called Leverrier, a suggestion which was met with a lot of opposition outside France. French almanacs promptly reintroduced the name Herschel for Uranus and Leverrier for the new planet.
