Neopaganism: New Paganism
built 628 days ago
Paganism (or Neopaganism to denote the modern revival) is an umbrella term which covers witchcraft, Wicca, Druidry, Asatru, Odinism and other pagan movements. Many consider witch and pagan to be interchangeable terms while others disagree. Witches and pagans actually do not even agree on what a witch or pagan really is. There are ... disagreements on whether there are differences between Wicca & witchcraft. Witchcraft & Neopagan groups vary widely from each other in rituals, techniques, some beliefs and purposes.

Some claims of continuity between Neopaganism and older forms of Paganism have been shown to be spurious, or outright false, as in the case of Iolo Morganwg's Druid's Prayer. Wiccan beliefs of an ancient monotheistic Goddess were inspired by Marija Gimbutas's description of Neolithic Europe. The factual historical validity of her theories have been disputed by many scholars, including historian Ronald Hutton.
Neopaganism began with the 19th century Romantic movement, and the surge of interest in Germanic paganism with the Viking revival in the British Isles and in Scandinavia. In Germany the Völkisch movement was in full swing. These Neopagan currents resulted in a wide-spread interest in folklore, ecology, occultism, romanticism and nationalism.

While Neopaganism does continue many beliefs and practices of original Paganism, including many of their Gods and Goddesses, it is in many other ways fundamentally different. For example, their beliefs about the fundamental nature of the Divinities behind those names are often completely different.
