- Paganism -- Neo-Paganism
Neo-Paganism (... spelled Neopaganism and also known as Paganism) is an increasingly popular religious movement emphasizing ancient pagan religious traditions and reverence for nature. It takes a variety of forms known as "paths," which range from Wicca, which focuses on spells and goddess worship, to Hellenic Polytheism, which seeks to revive Greek paganism in an academically accurate form. The articles in this section explain both the common characteristics and diverse forms of Neopaganism. - Pagan
Neo-Pagans are a community of faiths bringing ancient Pagan and magickal traditions to the modern age--including mostly Wicca but ... Druidism, Asatru, Shamanism, neo-Native American, and more. Neo-Pagan is an umbrella term for various and diverse beliefs with many elements in common. Some Neo-Pagans find no incongruence practicing Neo-Paganism along with adherence to another faith, such as Christianity or Judaism. - Neo

Just as the term "Eastern religions" refers to Buddhism, Hinduism, Taoism, etc., the terms "Neo-Pagan" "Neopagan," and "Pagan" refer to a collection of separate religions. Neopagan religions are reconstructions of ancient Pagan belief systems which had been abandoned. - Neopaganism -- Religions
Here Neopaganism is in a sense in an opposite position from much of mainstream Christianity, which, obsessed with an elusive chimera known as the "historical Jesus," has come more and more to cut itself off from spiritual experience. Neopaganism, by contrast, with its abundance of rituals and invocations, has plenty of room for experience but needs to face its own history. If it does, it will probably find that it is the "Old Religion" not in a literalistic sense but in recapturing some of the deepest and most ancient aspects of the spiritual impulse. This issue of GNOSIS is an attempt to help advance that process. - Wicca -- Religions
Wicca is a Neo-Pagan religion based on the pre-Christian traditions of England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. Its origins can be traced even further back to Paleolithic peoples who worshipped a Hunter God and a Fertility Goddess. Cave paintings found in France (and dated at 30,000 years old) depict a man with the head of a stag, and a woman with a swollen, pregnant belly. They stand in a circle with eleven mortals. These archetypes of the divine are worshipped by Wiccans to this very day. By these standards, the religion that is now called Wicca, is perhaps the oldest religion in the world. - Greek Religion -- Ancient Greek Religion
Ancient Greek religion has been the subject of speculation and research from classic times to the present. Herodotus believed that the rites of many of the gods had been derived from the Egyptians. Prodicus of Ceos (fl. 5th cent. BC), a Sophist philosopher, seems to have taught that the gods were simply personifications of natural phenomena, such as the sun, moon, winds, and water. Euhemerus (370?-298 BC), a mythographer, in his Sacred History, gave expression to ideas long prevalent when he interpreted the myths as distortions of history and the gods as idealized heroes of the past. In modern times, studies along etymological and anthropological lines have produced the theory that Greek religion resulted from the synthesis of Indo-European beliefs with ideas and customs native to the Mediterranean countries, the original inhabitants of those lands having been conquered by Indo-European invaders. - Greek Religion -- Cultures
Greek religion is a subject of absorbing interest, essential for the understanding of history and culture, but often puzzling and elusive. This collection of essays ranges over many aspects of Greek civil life, looking at the ways in which religion manifested itself in institutions, art and literature, and tracing the attitudes that lay behind the manifold cults and customs. It is not meant as an exhaustive introduction to the subject, but as a series of related approaches which will help students to draw the threads together, on lines suggested by Sir Moses Finley in his introduction to the book. - Homosexuality and Religion -- Catholic Church
Today some major denominations within these religions, such as Reform Judaism and the United Church of Christ, accept homosexuality. They believe that injunctions against the sexual acts were originally intended as a means of distinguishing religious worship between Abrahamic and pagan faiths, specifically Greek (Ganymede) and Egyptian rituals that made homosexuality a religious practice and not merely human sexuality. Thus, the prohibitions are ... no longer relevant. Some Christian denominations, such as the Presbyterian and Anglican churches, now welcome members regardless of same-sex sexual practices, and perform same-sex marriages, as do Reform and Reconstructionist Judaism. - Wiccan -- Wiccan Rede
The Wiccan Rede (pronounced "reed") is a saying that was formulated to sum up the ethics of the neo-Pagan religion Wicca. The most common form of the rede is An it harm none, do what ye will. "Rede" is a word from Middle English meaning "advice" or "counsel", cognate to the German Rat or Swedish råd. "An" is an archaic contraction of the word "and," meaning "if," as in the Shakespearean "an it please thee." Other variants include:
