Nelly Furtado is the daughter of ethnically Portuguese parents. Growing up, Nelly Furtado was musically gifted and began learning trombone and ukulele at the age of 9. She learned keyboards at age 11 and was composing her own songs by 13. In addition to supporting her musical ambitions, Nelly Furtado's parents instilled an ethic of hard work that has served her well. After graduating from high school, Furtado moved to Toronto to pursue her musical dreams.

Victoria, B.C., native Nelly Furtado was 18 when Philosopher Kings manager Chris Smith spotted her at a Toronto talent show. Her debut album, Whoa Nelly!, released in 2000 on DreamWorks, incorporated hip-hop and bossa nova musical influences. Her first single, "I’m Like a Bird," earned her a Grammy in 2001 for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

Nelly Furtado grew up in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada to parents of Portuguese descent. Throughout her childhood, her parents taught her the importance of a strict work ethic. Furtado spent eight summers working with her mother as a chambermaid at a local hotel. Growing up, the singer learned the guitar and began to write her own music at age twelve. She loved Mariah Carey, TLC, Jodeci, Salt N Pepa, Bell Biv DeVoe, Radiohead, Pulp, Oasis, Portishead, The Verve, U2, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, and Amalia Rodrigues. Thus, Furtado’s influences range from R&B, Brit-Pop, and Brazilian music.

A vibrant Canadian-born singer of Portuguese descent, Nelly Furtado broke onto the North-American scene in 2000 with her debut album Whoa, Nelly!.
