BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) - Nell Carter, who played the sassy, matronly housekeeper on the 1980s sitcom "Gimme a Break!" and received a Tony Award for her performance in the Broadway musical "Ain't Misbehavin'," died Thursday, her publicist said. She was 54.

NELL CARTER earned a Tony Award for her performance in Ain't Misbehavin', and played the dastardly Miss Hannigan in the Broadway revival of Annie. Carter's six-year stint on the popular TV series Gimme a Break earned her two Emmy Award nominations. Film: Hair, The Proprietor, The Grass Harp and Modern Problems. In New York Carter studied acting and performed in such nightclubs as Reno Sweeney, the Village Gate, Dangerfield's, the Apartment, and the Rainbow Room. She made her stage debut in Soon, but really made a name for herself on the New York stage in the blockbuster Broadway musical Ain't Misbehavin', which was a revue of songs by Fats Waller. She won a Tony award in 1978 for the role. When Ain't Misbehavin'; was broadcast on TV in 1982, she earned an Emmy award for her performance. "She was a pioneer in many ways," fellow Tony award winner Audra McDonald told the Chicago Tribune. "She had the ability to be such an incredible comedic musical-theater actress, blow a song all the way to the back of the wall and then come down and be so intimate and beautiful in a ballad."

Carter first gained fame on Broadway, where she won a Tony in 1978 for the Fats Waller musical revue ''Ain't Misbehavin'.'' She later won an Emmy for the TV production of the show. Her greatest fame came from her starring role as the housekeeper for a small-town police chief's family on ''Gimme a Break!'', which ran from 1981 to 1987. She was nominated for two more Emmys for the show and participated in its milestone live episode in 1985, the first for a primetime sitcom in nearly 30 years. In the 1990s, she played a school principal on TV's ''Hangin' With Mr. Cooper'' and returned to Broadway as Miss Hannigan in a revival of ''Annie.''
