"At a time when few artists can hold an audience of 20,000 with the strength of their music alone, Neil Young and Pearl Jam stand as unique concert experiences. Though the phrase has always been essentially meaningless as a genre tag, Young has often been called "the godfather of grunge," while the Seattle quintet was one of the sound's most successful purveyors when it burst on the scene in the early '90s.
As a child, Young moved with his mother to Winnipeg, Canada, after she divorced his father, a well-known sports journalist. He played in several high school rock bands, including the Esquires, the Stardusters, and the Squires. He ... began hanging out in local folk clubs, where he met Stephen Stills and Joni Mitchell. Mitchell wrote “The Circle Game” for Young after hearing his “Sugar Mountain.” In the mid-’60s Young moved to Toronto, where he began performing solo. In 1966 he and bassist Bruce Palmer joined the Mynah Birds (which included Rick James and had a deal with Motown Records); after that fizzled, he and Palmer drove to L.A. in Young’s Pontiac hearse.
Previous Rock the Vote honorees include: Dave Matthews, Destiny's Child, Neil Young, Wyclef Jean, Sting, Bono, R.E.M., Pearl Jam, Queen Latifah, Hootie & the Blowfish, Sheryl Crow, L.L. Cool J., Beastie Boys, Peter Gabriel, Alanis Morissette, Chuck D, President Bill Clinton, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton and Aaron Sorkin.

In 1995, Pearl Jam recorded an album with Young called Mirror Ball. Because of record company restrictions, the name Pearl Jam could not appear anywhere on the album, but each member is named individually.
