Neil Young: Gold Rush

That's only one indication of how much the mercurial, unpredictable Young is greatly enjoying another journey through the past as of late. Last year, he launched a series of from-the-vault concert discs that presumably will run many volumes, and chronologically (the second, "Live From Massey Hall," falls between his 1970 masterpiece "After the Gold Rush" and his commercial blockbuster "Harvest" two years later). Meanwhile, Neilphiles continue to salivate at the prospect of a long-rumored "Archives" box set, a treasure trove of unreleased material Young has been assembling that looks more and more like a reality with each passing year.

The first four seasons of the series have launched the careers of promising artists including Chris Young, Buddy Jewell, Miranda Lambert and Erika Jo. Jewell debuted his self-titled CD at No. 1 on the Billboard Country Albums chart, which was eventually certified gold by the RIAA. Runner-up Miranda Lambert became a household name when her "Kerosene" became the highest-selling debut album of 2005 and then went on to be certified gold as well. Erika Jo landed at No. 5 on the same chart with her self-titled debut CD and at No. 27 on the Hot 200 Album Chart (all genres). Most recently, Chris Young debuted his self-entitled CD at #3 on the Billboard Country Albums chart, making him the top selling debut male artist of 2006.
The closing track is pure Neil Young magic. The hymnal piano and gospel styling recall the title track from After the Gold Rush. Where Young once agonised over environmental issues he now addresses his own fate. It's a set of questions to God, an attempt to place himself within this world and the next. Naked and honest, not bleak, simply uplifting.

The highlight of the hour-long set came about 40 minutes in when Young took the stool at the upright piano for a truly moving version of the sparse, tender "After The Goldrush." He voice was in top form and the passion that seeped through the performance proved yet again that this is a man who has no intention of fading away. He tipped his hat to the state of the world today, and got a huge reaction when he adapted "Look at Mother Nature on the run in 1970s" to "Look at Mother Nature on the run in the 21st century."
