Neil Young: Crazy Horse
built 638 days ago
Acclaimed as one of the most important composers and performers of all time, Neil Young could almost be two artists in one body. His work ranges from the beautiful and moving folk sounds he has produced as a solo artist and with Crosby, Stills and Nash to the powerful and energetic rock which has often been the result of his collaboration with Crazy Horse and which earned him the nickname 'the Godfather of Grunge'.

One of the few Woodstock-generation rockers whose late career didn't rely on reunions and re-issues, Neil Young in the '90s earned the title "Godfather of Grunge", along with a new generation of followers. From his early days with Buffalo Springfield to his 1970s heyday with his band Crazy Horse, Young's plaintive voice and raw guitar earned him success with pop tunes, protest songs and even country ballads. After a series of experimental and commercially unsuccessful records in the '80s, Young returned to raw-edged rock and roll, making him a hero to bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam.

At one time, Neil Young and Stephen Stills' songwriting styles fit together like a horse and feather; basically, they were both into stinging acid rock and bluesy country-folk-rock. This was why Buffalo Springfield sold so many hundred of albums! What - you thought it was because the chicks dug Richie Furay? Yeah, TRY AGAIN. One look at the latest SoundScan numbers for Pickin' Up The Pieces will send that thought running straight out your head and up the back alleyway. Nope, it was because of the significant songwriting talents of Neil Young and Ol' Flabby.

Neil Young is finally ready to roll out releases from his long-rumored "Archives Performance" series. The first volume, which appropriately is titled "Live at the Fillmore East 1970", features a compilation of material that was taken from Crazy Horse's performance at the fabled Fillmore East in New York City on March 6-7, 1970.

Young’s wandering got more extreme with Everybody’s Rockin’, a rockabilly-style album recorded and performed with a group he dubbed the Shocking Pinks. Despite an amusing video for the single “Wonderin’,” Young’s work started sliding down the charts. Old Ways was a country record with guest spots by Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings. Landing on Water used synthesizers on standard rock songs. And Life reunited Young with Crazy Horse in lackluster performances. After his disastrous relationship with Geffen - in which he was ultimately slapped with a $3 million suit for making “unrepresentative,” noncommercial music - Young returned to his former label for This Note’s for You, a horn-based R&B album.
