Singer and songwriter Neil Innes may be best known for his years with Monty Python. But he still writes and performs songs in his inimitable style, a peculiarly British blend of absurdity and intelligence. Music journalist Ashley Kahn caught up with Innes during his recent American tour.

Neil provided many a musical interlude for Monty Python perhaps most famously in the form of Brave Sir Robin's Minstrel. He ... featured in Series 4 of Monty Python, and was victorious against the gladiator in Life Of Brian.

Neil James Innes was born in Danbury, Essex, on 9th December 1944. Innes attended Thorpe Grammar School, then moved on to the Norwich School of Fine Art in 1962. In 1964, Innes started at Goldsmith’s College School of Art. It was during his time at Goldsmith’s that he joined the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band. In 1966, Innes graduated with a BA in Fine Arts. This turned out to be rather a big year for Innes, with him marrying his wife, and turning professional with the band.

[L]ike Spike Jones and His City Slickers, Neil Innes has been committing musical mayhem for years since both the Bonzos and the Rutles broke up. In the past few years, his fan club has bullied him into releasing the Recollections series, limited edition CDs that are "a mixture of old favourites and unreleased tracks include demos from Neil's private archive." Recollections 3 is the latest and last in the series.

As an adjunct to the festival Neil Innes performed a show of Rutles music - in character of Ron Nasty. Teaming up with local Beatles Tribute band, The MopTops, the concert was jokingly billed as a performance by Ron Nasty and the New Rutles. The show, held at the legendary Troubadour club in Los Angeles, was an immediate sell out, and a second show was added - which ... sold out.
