In Nebraska, the life sciences industry is thriving because its workforce has a flare for technology, and the state's tax incentive programs make it profitable for internationally-known companies to expand. Nebraska is home to production facilities for Novartis, Teledyne Isco, Pfizer, MDS Pharma Services, Schering-Plough Animal Health, 3M Corporation and Becton-Dickinson. That, combined with Nebraska's major medical centers in Omaha, the University of Nebraska's bioscience research centers in Lincoln and two new technology parks, make Nebraska a great place for the life sciences community.

In addition to the state tax, some Nebraska cities assess a city sales and use tax, up to a maximum of 1.5%. One county in Nebraska, Dakota County, levies a sales tax. All real property located within the state of Nebraska is taxable unless specifically exempted by statute. Since 1992, only depreciable personal property is subject to tax and all other personal property is exempt from tax.
Nebraska has a reputation of being a flat, monotonous region of farm and ranchland, but this stereotype has come from the many people who drive across Nebraska on the Interstate 80 corridor (the Platte River valley). Those who venture off this heavily travelled road discover that Nebraska does have a subtle, wide-open beauty that is all its own.

Irrigated corn fields in Nebraska rated 86% good to-excellent and 82% of dryland corn rated that well. The report noted that dry weather in the Panhandle is beginning to stress pasture and crops there. As for Nebraska wheat, 10% of the crop is now ripe and harvest did get underway last week. The USDA report suggested the Nebraska wheat harvest will begin in earnest as this week moves forward. Soybean conditions look almost as good, with 81% rated good-to-excellent.

The territory of Nebraska became a state on March 1, 1867. It was decided that the state should be named after the largest river in the area. That particular river had been given two names. The white settlers had named it the Platte River, which is what it is known as today. An Oto Indian tribe living in the area called the river Nebraska, which means "flat water." No one is sure how Nebraska was chosen over Platte, but most agree it was the better choice.
