Navigation that appears to be composed of clickable buttons is a feature of many web sites. This kind of navigation is often created using images to which effects are applied to make the edges look beveled and button-like. Often, some JavaScript code is used to swap in another image, so the button appears to depress when the user holds the cursor over it or clicks on the image.

Using a new research method, the Stichting Onderzoek Navigatiesystemen ("Navigation Systems Research Foundation") has discovered why navigation systems cannot find ring roads in cities. Software errors are the cause. The Foundation predicts a catastrophic development if the authorities do not intervene: more traffic accidents and casualties, and side roads becoming jammed with volumes of traffic for which they were not designed.

The NavigationHandler selects the navigation rule that matches the page currently displayed. It then matches the outcome or the action method reference it received from the default ActionListener with those defined by the navigation cases. It first tries to match both the method reference and the outcome against the same navigation case. If that fails, it will attempt to match the outcome. Finally, it will attempt to match the action method reference if the previous two attempts failed.

Navigation is critical to compact pages and less critical for extended pages with lots of content. Forty percent of participants clicked on the navigation bar when viewing homepage No. 2, which was a compact-design page with only five headline links and did not require scrolling to see the entire page. This was far more than any other page. The least-clicked navigation was on homepage No. 7 (which was the same design as No. 2, but with 17 headlines). On that homepage, only 7 percent of participants clicked on the navigation.
