Contact with European Americans, for the most part, proved enormously damaging to the continuation of traditional Native American cultural activities, religious ceremonies, and artistic practices. Yet despite illness, economic disadvantage, lack of political power, and inadequate educational and employment opportunities, Native Americans have not forgotten the histories and traditional practices that make their cultures distinct.

Hiawatha is perhaps the most famous Native American in history. The famous author Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote a story that was based loosely on Hiawatha's life, which was entitled ‘The Song of Hiawatha’. Little historical data remains of Hiawatha's life, although it is widely known that he was a peacemaker, a leader, and a spiritual guide. European settlers brought infectious diseases against which the Native Americans had no natural immunity. Chicken pox and measles, though common and rarely fatal among Europeans, often proved deadly to Native Americans. Smallpox proved particularly deadly to Native American populations.[12] Epidemics often immediately followed European exploration, sometimes destroying entire villages. While precise figures are difficult to arrive at, some historians estimate that up to 80% of some Native populations died due to European diseases.[13]
