History records that the vanguard of angst-ridden intellectuals in Time, struggling to imagine God as a cloud of gas in the far reaches of the galaxy, never did sweep the nation. What was dying in 1966 was a well-meaning but arid theology born of rationalism: a wavering trumpet call for ethical behavior, a search for meaning in a letter to the editor in favor of civil rights. What would be born in its stead, in a cycle of renewal that has played itself out many times since the Temple of Solomon, was a passion for an immediate, transcendent experience of God. And a uniquely American acceptance of the amazingly diverse paths people have taken to find it.

Dr. Buckner notes that the Nation of Islam ... emphasizes mentoring, taking a younger person under one's wing to model moral principles. Its members do not (or are not supposed to) use drugs, drink alcohol, smoke cigarettes, or eat pork. Their use of profanity is supposed to be limited, but this guideline is bent fairly often. They emphasize fidelity to one's spouse, and have built self-esteem and self-confidence among people badly in need both.

Now these Muslims are going to get convicted for trying to kill Americans, and they’ll go to jail , serve their time and hang out with the Nation of Islam and be treated like heroes. Kind of like making a pedophile serve his sentence in a kindergarten. We really need to think of some way of causing discomfort to people who break the law, instead of putting them in with their own kind maybe they should be shackled in a shack in the middle of the desert with only a weekly ration drop. Only fair, they wanted to kill lots of Americans and will try to do it when they finally get out on parole. Make em suffer, no cable, no sodas, no three hots and a cot. Make them live worse then front line troops.

The NOI has a do-for-self philosophy that resulted in the NOI owning and operating hundreds of businesses nationwide, employing thousands of people. The NOI has purchased and now operates food-industry services, bakeries, and restaurants. It owns a large amount of farmland in Georgia, USA. It owns and operates hair-care shops. Some of these business ventures have been success stories. Others have been criticized as Amway-style marketing schemes that have not benefited most of their employees.
