According to Dr. Jerry Buckner, a black Christian pastor and an authority on the Nation of Islam, several factors attract young black men to this movement. To begin with, the Nation offers positive social programs to the community. Its members are active in jails and prisons, recruiting men behind bars and dissuading them from a life of crime.

Members of the Nation of Islam shut down the taping of America's first black gay television series last Friday in a demonstration at the South Central Los Angeles filming location of the series. Jasmyne Cannick, a producer of Noah's Arc, reported the news by email and on her blog on Tuesday, describing it as an example of "bigotry and intolerance."

In the Nation of Islam, women are expected to be modest in public. This includes dressing modestly. Members are taught to respect women as the mothers of civilization. All followers are taught to strive for cleanliness, both inside and out. Members of the organization do not eat pork and are expected to abstain from alcohol, drugs, and tobacco.

All of the Original People of the Earth are already members of the Nation of Islam. Islam is the nature that Allah created in human beings. By birth, you are a Muslim; that is, one who submits his/her will to do the Will of God. Well, now that you know you are already in the Nation of Islam, how do you become a registered Muslim in the Nation?

The Nation of Islam represents a serious threat to the Christian community. The growing presence of the Nation of Islam and their attacks on essential Christian doctrines make it difficult to continue ignoring them. The black church must awake to the challenge. There have been two problems the black church has faced in rising to this challenge: (1) the lack of evangelism in fulfilling its role to the community and (2) the lack of biblical discipleship for church members.

Two other things make the Nation of Islam attractive: the discipline, and the power they have to externally "clean up" a neighborhood. In an NOI mosque, members are told very strongly that they have to abide by the rules of the mosque. Infractions could be dealt with by public tongue-lashing before the Muslim congregation, or even by physical violence or beating of the offenders. A Muslim who has sex out of wedlock may find himself and his girlfriend hauled before the congregation and publicly rebuked for disgracing Islam before the world. In a white, Christian setting, much lighter "church discipline" has been instant grounds for a lawsuit against the church and its pastor; whereas in a black Muslim setting, severe public corrections are looked on with favor as positive discipline.
