Nation of Islam: Louis Farrakhan
built 201 days ago
March 20: Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan began a visit to Cuba. Farrakhan was welcomed by the head of the Cuban legislature, Ricardo Alarcon, the state news agency Prensa Latina reported. The US Muslim leader ... is scheduled to meet with Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque and other government officials and to visit the Latin American School of Medicine. Farrakhan - known for his controversial conspiracy theories such as that the New Orleans levee was breached during Hurricane Katrina because of an intentional explosion aimed at flooding the city and "getting rid of the poor people" - will also visit an art school and meet with Cuban athletes. In addition, he will meet with relatives of the five Cuban agents sentenced by a Miami court in 2001 to prison terms of 15 years to life for espionage.

In 1979, the minister Louis Farrakhan, leader of the New York Mosque, announced his departure from Wallace's WCIW and his plans to establish a group under his leadership, reclaiming the name "Nation of Islam." Farrakhan had become skeptical about the reforms instituted by Wallace and vowed that the new NOI would resuscitate the ideology of Wallace's father. Farrakhan's fiery public preachments reflected the style of Malcolm X and attracted the attention of many non-Muslims (especially young people) who admired his bold critiques. During the 1980s and 1990s, few African American leaders stepped forward to express the anger shared by millions of blacks suffering from racial oppression.

Despite the historic discord between the Jewish community and the Nation of Islam, a handful of Jewish leaders have declared that it is worth attempting to engage the Nation of Islam in dialogue to foster better relations. For example, Prominent Rabbi Marc Schneier, President of the Foundation For Ethnic Understanding (FFEU), held a private meeting with Minister Louis Farrakhan. Jewish leaders who engaged in this outreach stated that they hoped this would lead in a change of tone and content from NOI spokespeople in regards to the Jewish people. Since then... further attempts at dialogue have faltered.

Despite vicious attacks by Nation of Islam leaders on Christianity, the black church has barely responded. The result has been that the NOI has proved a bridge for African-Americans to move in large numbers toward Islam. In her self-published reply to Louis Farrakhan, Dodds does not mince words, calling the NOI leader ''an antichrist and a false prophet steered by racist views...His spiritual father is Satan.'' To show that he ''teaches false doctrine,'' she closely analyses in detail four of Farrakhan's notable speeches in 1995-96, including his address at the Million Man March. She is particulary upset at the way he tries to ''convince unstudied Christians that Muslims and Christians worship the same God and that the Bible and the Koran basically say the same thing.'' Toward this end, she finds he again and again "takes biblical scripture and perverts it." She ... points to many inconsistencies in Farrakhan's statements, his close ties to dictators like Mu'ammar al-Qadhd! hafi, and the unspeakable blasphemy of his likening himself to God. Whether Dodds is a lonely voice in the wilderness or the cutting edge of major black Christian response is yet to be seen.

Over the years the Nation of Islam has had a close relationship with Libyan dictator Muammar Khaddafi. A number of years ago they received a three million dollar loan from Khaddafi and in 1985 received another loan worth five million dollars. Also in 1985 Farrakhan invited Khaddafi to be the keynote speaker, via satellite TV hookup from Libya, at the Savior's Day celebration, and gave him a warm introduction to the audience of 13,000.
