After the rain delay, Dechy won three quick points of a tiebreaker to win the second set. But Dechy struggled in the third set, later saying she had problems with the conditions.

Clearly on a roll, Dechy raced to a 5-1 lead in the tiebreak after Dementieva netted a couple of easy groundstrokes. However, just when it looked as though the match was going to a surprise third set (Dechy had four set points), Dementieva finally found her composure to fight back and take the tiebreak 9-7.

In a tight first set, Pierce saved her best game for last as she led 6-5 with Dechy serving to stay in the set. Pierce, who had her forehand working all night, broke at love to win the set.

Schiavone and Peschke took the early break, but Zvonereva and Dechy rallied back to secure the first set. With no double faults and no unforced errors, the pair, hailing from Russia and France, respectively, played a much cleaner match.
