Natalie Portman: Free Zone
built 135 days ago
Natalie Portman has spent some of her free time involved in causes such as the Democrats' 2004 U.S. presidential campaign and ending poverty. In 2004 and 2005 she travelled to Uganda, Guatemala, and Ecuador as the Ambassador of Hope for FINCA International, an organization that promotes micro-lending to help finance women-owned businesses in poor countries. In an interview conducted backstage at the Live 8 concert in Philadelphia and appearing on the PBS program Foreign Exchange with Fareed Zakaria she discussed micro-financing.

Unfortunately, Natalie Portman didn't win last night in the category she was nominated. Instead, Cate Blanchett received the award for best supporting female actress for her appearance in The Aviator. Closer co-star, Clive Owen was ... beat by Morgan Freeman (Million Dollar Baby) in the category for best supporting actor. Stay tuned for pictures.

In a crushing blow to trouser tents everywhere Natalie Portman has been quoted as saying she will not do nude scenes anymore. Unless you live under a rock - or don't care about naked celebrities - you know that Natalie took it all off for a nude scene in Wes Anderson's Hotel Chevalier, a 13 minute free online prequel to The Darjeeling Limited.

Natalie kept a fairly low profile in 2006, appearing in only a couple of different projects. First up was V for Vendetta, a futuristic thriller based on Alan Moore’s acclaimed graphic novel. She followed that up with an appearance in a low-budget foreign film called Free Zone, which cast Natalie as an American tourist exploring her roots in Israel. Natalie’s recurring place on out Top 99 doesn’t come as much of a surprise, as she is (and will surely continue to be) one of the most interesting and flat-out talented actresses of her generation.

While everything in Israel is political, Natalie says, Free Zone is not explicitly so. She speaks passionately about the conflict, but for her, "living in Israel is really beautiful. One of the most shocking things is how peaceful it feels."
