built 613 days ago
New generation of world leaders In April 1955, soon after an Israeli raid on Egyptian-controlled Gaza left 50 Egyptians dead, Nasser was in Bandung to attend the first Afro-Asian Conference. There he met Chou En Lai, Nehru and Sukarno; a new generation of world leaders from the South was born. A major result of Bandung would follow shortly. The Block Free States.

Although widely reviled by Israel and its supporters, Nasser, the son of a postal clerk, had been a great Arab leader. While he was a compulsive conspirator, suspicious of others and thin-skinned to criticism, he was ... charismatic, a natural leader and eventually the most beloved and admired Arab of his time. He was never interested in women or money or elaborate food. After he came to power the cynical old politicians tried to corrupt him but they failed miserably. The world itself had found in him one of its most controversial statesmen and the Arabs had chosen him as the symbol of their lost dignity and their unfulfilled hopes." Note 12

After the USSR informed Nasser of Israeli plans to attack Syria, Nasser sought the re-militarization of the Sinai peninsula and demanded that United Nations Emergency Force evacuate the Sinai, a request with which UN Secretary-General U Thant complied. Nasser then began to re-militarize the Sinai. On May 23, he closed the Straits of Tiran, through which Israel had gained access after the 1956 war, to Israeli shipping, blockading the Israeli port of Eilat at the northern end of the Gulf of Aqaba, Israel's only access to the Indian Ocean. The closure was considered by Israel to be a casus belli.

Opinion about Nasser is sharply divided. His detractors cite his police-state methods and criticize his foreign policies. Others praise his internal reforms and his wresting of Egypt from the grasp of foreigners and a decadent monarchy. Beyond doubt, he was the foremost Arab leader of his time.A.L.S.-M., AFAF LUTFI AL-SAYYID-MARSOT, M.A., D.Phil.

Nasser emerged only reluctantly as the champion of the Arab struggle against Israel. A few dangerous paramilitary actions had drawn Egypt into the conflict in the early to mid-1950s. Small bands of Palestinians, including some operating from the Egyptian-controlled Gaza Strip, launched raids against Israel. Israel immediately developed a policy of massive reprisal against the Arab states sheltering the raiders.

Nasser now blocked the Suez Canal. He ... used his new status to urge Arab nations to reduce oil exports to Western Europe. As a result petrol rationing had to be introduced in several countries and two months after the invasion Anthony Eden resigned from office.
