Few Arab politicians rivaled the impact of Gamal Abdel Nasser (... known as Jamal Abd al-Nasir) on the Arab world in the twentieth century. His mid-century revolution and his rule of Egypt followed the corrupt monarchy of King Farouk and was fueled by nationalism. It held out the promise of socialism and Arab unity, stirring the imaginations of Arabic-speaking intellectuals and common people.
