In 1998 Nas made his feature film debut, appearing in Belly. Co-starring with fellow rapper DMX, the two hip-hop stars played best friends. Although they both come from the same violent neighborhood, these two friends want very different things out of life. Tommy, played by DMX, is willing to do whatever it takes to attain money, power, and women. Nas's character, Sincere, wishes only to provide for his girlfriend and their child. To do so, he has partnered with Tommy in a world of crime, violence, and drugs.

Following the competitive nature of east coast rap, one of Brooklyn's most prolific rhymeslingers, Jay-Z, found himself in a war-on-wax with Nas - Queensbridge #1 draft. Although, many later claimed that Nas won the battle with "Ether," his esoteric, yet wittily ferocious response to Jay-Z's "Takeover," both rappers claimed victory in their most recent BET interview.

O'Reilly and the media were not the only people upset by Nas' inclusion in the concert line-up. The violent lyrics of some the rapper’s songs ... have been cause for concern among the victim’s families who maintain that the decision to include Nas in the lineup shows a lack of respect for victims of April 16. Many Virginia Tech students shared the same opinions, flooding the student-run university paper, the Collegiate Times, with articles, editorials, and letters to the editor declaring that the performance of songs that glorify murder do not belong at a concert for the friends and families of murder victims.
