Nas on stage, 2006. Nas was born Nasir Jones on September 14, 1973, in Queens, New York. His father, Olu Dara, a jazz and blues trumpeter, chose the name Nasir for his son because of its Arabic meaning: "helper" or "protector." Nas was raised by his mother, Fannie Ann Jones.

During an interview at the 2008 Grammy Awards, while promoting his new album, Nas stated "Whoever can abolish this thing that doesn't' allow black people to vote after twenty three years." [35]. Bloggers and other opinionists speculated that Nas was referring to the expiration of the temporary provisions of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 [36] and various internet urban legends surrounding their expiration. These rumors have been previously dispelled by groups such as the NAACP. [37]
