Campbell was born May 22, 1970, in Stratham, London, England. As a child, she gained a taste of acting, appearing in a film called Quest for Fire. Along with her early start in the modeling profession, she honed her limelight skills by attending the London Academy for Performing Arts. Her enduring career as a model and background in performance would lead her to the Hollywood scene, where she gained credits alongside numerous big names in film. Her film debut came in 1991, when she appeared as a singer in Cool As Ice. In 1995, Campbell played Kaia in Miami Rhapsody starring Antonio Banderas and Sarah Jessica Parker, and a year later appeared in Spike Lee's Girl 6. Fifteen-year-old Naomi was spotted while window-shopping in London's Covent Garden by ex head of Synchro, Beth Bold, and her career took flight. After her pose on Elle's cover in April 1986, Naomi broke fashion terrain in August 1988 by being the first black model to pose for the French Vogue cover. Soon she was working for big guns Ralph Lauren, Francois Nars, Lee Jeans, Olympus, Jazz and Versace.

In 1995, she published a novel, Swan, and released an album, Babywoman, although neither to high acclaim. In 1996, she made her big screen debut in Spike Lee's Girl Six and was honoured with a waxwork at London's Madame Tussauds. Four years later, the figure, wearing a slinky green Versace number donated by Naomi herself, had to be put behind a cordon after falling prey to "overly frisky" male visitors.
