Nancy Lopez has accepted a special exemption to play in the 2002 U.S. Women's Open, July 4-7 at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan. Lopez, 45, has never won the Open in 24 tries.

Nancy Lopez was born in Torrance, Calif., in 1957. At the age of 12, she won the New Mexico Women's Amateur. In the following years as an amateur, she won the U.S. Junior Girls Championship twice, the Western Junior three times, the Mexican Amateur once, and was a member of the U.S. Curtis Cup and World Amateur teams. Ms. Lopez began her professional career in 1977. In 1978, she won nine tournaments - including a record-setting five in a row. Including three LPGA championships, she has won 48 official tournaments on the LPGA Tour.

As a final kick in the pants, Lopez's choices will guarantee less of her all-so-important experience at the next Solheim Cup. After all, Wie and Pressel will still be rookies to the Cup next time because they are not playing this time. And no matter the captain, those two will be on the team. Top ten in points won't be a problem for either of them.

At age 50, Lopez has decided to make a comeback starting with the Ginn OPEN. Although Lopez has played in only 11 events since 2002 and hasn’t had top-10 finish since 1997, she believes she still has what it takes to compete.
