Nancy Lopez: Lpga Tour

Nancy Lopez will not have to qualify to play in any LPGA events. She has earned LPGA Hall of Fame honors which in turn will allow her to enter any and/or all LPGA events she may desire to enter for her lifetime.

Lopez stormed on to the LPGA tour in 1978 with nine tournament wins, including a record five in a row. The charismatic young star led the tour in earnings and was named Rookie of the Year, LPGA Player of the Year, an honor she went on to receive three more times, and the Vare Trophy for best scoring average. Lopez remains the only LPGA player to have won Rookie of the Year and Player of the Year in the same year. In her first two full years on the tour, she won an astounding 17 tournaments. In 1979 she was again named Player of the Year and won the Vare Trophy.

Worse than all the other errors, though, Lopez ... fails to build her team around the course the competition will be held on. So much for home-course advantage. The Stick requires length, first and foremost. So instead of taking big hitters off the tee, she goes for "experience". Meantime, the European captain chose an excellent team for the course, making four of her five selections very long hitters. There's an idea - get players who will perform well on the tournament course. Crazy!

The award is a key facet of the long-time relationship between Nancy Lopez and the Chick-fil-A Charity Championship hosted by Nancy Lopez. As the event’s official host, Lopez will present the award to Creamer at a gala banquet to be held Thursday, May 12 of the Chick-fil-A tournament week. Along with the award comes a sponsor invitation to compete in the tournament. As she is now an LPGA member, Creamer will not need the invitation to participate. In addition, the tournament is donating $1,000 in Creamer’s name to the First Tee programs in Sarasota, Fla., and Pleasanton, Calif.

Lopez found instant success as a rookie. She won nine times, including a record-setting five in a row (later matched by Annika Sorenstam). That year she was rookie of the year, player of the year and won the Vare Trophy, the only player to have done this in the same season. The wins continued to roll in the following season with eight in 1979 and one or more wins each year except one until 1993. In all, Lopez has won 48 times with three of those being majors (the LPGA Championship in 1978, ‘85 and ‘89).

Along with the award comes a sponsor invitation to compete in the tournament. Since Ochoa is now an LPGA Tour member, her sponsor exemption was given to Michelle Wie. In addition, the tournament is donating $1,000 in Ochoa's name to La Barranca in Guadalajara and AIM for the Handicapped, one of the tournament beneficiaries.
